A classic example of a tower mill, Stansted Windmill is close to unique in having most of it’s original machinery, with few replaced components.
Grain must be hoisted to the very top of the Mill before moving in stages to the floors below as it is ground and refined.
To the right of the door inside the ground floor you can still just make out the rough initials J.L. – Joseph Linsell, who built the Mill.
The millstones would have revolved at around 120 rpm, or twice per second.
